One famous course is Pumpkin Ridge, where Tiger Woods captured a record-setting third consecutive U.S. Amateur title in 1996. Pumpkin, which continues to host championships, has two courses, Witch Hollow (its private course) and Ghost Creek (open to the public). Golf Digest named Ghost Creek its Best New Public Course the year it opened (1992). Both courses sit on 350 acres of rolling farmland just 20 miles west of downtown Portland. Call 503.647.9977 for a tee-time or visit www.pumpkinridge.com.

Another amazing course is The Reserve Vineyards and Golf Club, which also sits just 20 minutes from downtown Portland on the edge of the Willamette Valley's famous wine country. The Reserve offers two 18-hole championship courses, both open to the public on a rotating basis. Call 503.649.8191 for a tee-time or visit www.reservegolf.com.

Visit the Oregon Golf Association for more information about local public courses.
