OMSI and Bagdad Theater present a special Science Pub, Food Fray: Inside the Controversy over Genetically Modified Food from 7-9 p.m. (doors open at 5). Americans have been eating genetically modified foods for more than a decade, though not without scientific and ethical questions and concerns. From Oregon ballot measures to World Trade Organization battles to issues of hunger and food security in developing countries, the controversy continues. At this Science Pub, real-life experiences and wide-ranging perspectives of the scientists, farmers, policy-makers and grassroots activists on the front lines of this fierce debate will be on-hand.

Learn about the amazing adaptive power of the brain when the largest Brain Fair in the country returns to OMSI to celebrate the closing of BODY WORLDS & The Brain. The free fair is the grand finale of Oregon Health & Science University's (OHSU) Brain Awareness Season 2011. This year's cerebral celebration will include interactive exhibits, real human brains, crafts, demonstrations, prizes, and OHSU neuroscientists explaining their groundbreaking research. OMSI and Mission Theater present a special Science Pub: Scientific and Humanitarian Lessons from the Haiti and Japan Earthquakes from 7-9 p.m. Though magnitude 7 events happen dozens of times a year around the world, the January 2010 earthquake in Haiti killed a near-record number of people, while Japan's massive earthquake of March 2011 resulted in fewer deaths, but wreaked widespread tsunami devastation. What did scientists and the public know or not know in both cases and what did they learn? At this Science Pub, learn about the scientific aspects of both the Haiti and Japan earthquakes, including ongoing and future risks, implications for the U.S., and an overview of the relief and reconstruction efforts in Haiti.

Oregon Symphony presents A Tribute to Benny Goodman, the great dance band leader who launched so many careers and took jazz and swing to Carnegie Hall. Remember Let's Dance, I Got Rhythm and Sing, Sing, Sing? Renowned clarinetist Dave Bennett and his sextet, backed by the orchestra, will transport us back to that great era.
