This historic 1915 elementary school was shuttered and scheduled for demolition in the mid-'90s before the McMenamin brothers stepped in to renovate the building and grounds into one of the Pacific Northwest's most unusual hotels and restaurants. Enjoy breakfast, lunch and dinner in the Courtyard Restaurant, set in the old cafeteria. Order a handcrafted ale made in the pink-tiled brewery (once the little girls' lavatory). Play a round of shuffleboard in the Boiler Room Bar, where custodians once hung out. Do time in the Detention Bar with a whiskey or go online in the Honors Bar using their free WiFi. Kennedy's theater-pub, named one of the "Ten Theaters That Do It Right" by Entertainment Weekly, offers recent-run movies along with pizza, burgers, ales and more. Finally, stay overnight in one of 35 classrooms-turned-guestrooms (with original chalkboards and cloakrooms still intact). It's a one-of-a-kind experience that you won't soon forget.
