McMenamins introduces a new series to their theaters: the Great Northwest Film Tour will screen independent, unreleased films across the Pacific Northwest McMenamins' theater-pubs. It's a chance for filmmakers to promote their movies and it's a chance for guests to see something new and cool. The first tour gives you "Adventures in Plymptoons!," a documentary about cartoonist Bill Plympton, who will attend the inaugural screening at the Mission Theater on May 19; the film's director and producer will tour with all screenings. |

Portland Art Museum presents an exhibition celebrating the lyrical paintings of Mark Rothko (1903-1970). This special exhibit features 45 works from the late 1920s until shortly before Rothko's death in 1970. Regarded as one of the leading American artists of the 20th century, Mark Rothko began his life in art as Marcus Rothkowitz in Portland, Ore. Having emigrated from Russia as a 10-year-old with his mother and older sister in 1913 to join his father and brothers in Portland, Rothko attended Lincoln High School and took his first art classes at the Museum Art School before going off to Yale, New York City and beyond.

The second in the Portland Art Museum's yearlong series of major installation works by important postwar figures, Joseph Beuys features the monumental environmental work, Blitzschlag mit Lichtschein auf Hirsch (Lightning with Stag in its Glare), 1958-1985, along with selected multiples that extend the installation's conceptual framework.
